Energizing Ontario's economy: The impact of Bruce Power

Published date: May 14, 2024

When I first saw Bruce Power from the viewing balcony of the Visitor’s Center, I was struck by the size and scope of a place that impacts so much of Ontario’s economy, yet very few people outside of the region actually visit. In fact that day, there were just two of us in the Visitor’s Center, getting a very friendly, and attentive tour, learning about the over 4,000 direct jobs that Bruce Power creates in the area, and 22,000 direct and indirect jobs from the life extension projects.

Sitting on the shore of Lake Huron in Ontario, Bruce Power is than just a nuclear power facility; it serves as a cornerstone of economic growth, energy security, and a catalyst for jobs. Which mean people, which means a growing need for housing.

Let's delve into what Bruce Power represents, its significance for Ontario, and the multifaceted impact it has on employment, communities, and real estate along the shores of Lake Huron.

    Bruce Power – Electricity powerhouse

Bruce Power is Canada's largest nuclear power plant. Its eight nuclear reactors generate approximately 30% of Ontario's electricity – electricity that is used by every person, business, and hospital in the province. And, all of this while emitting zero greenhouse gases, thereby playing a pivotal role in the province's energy portfolio. And, with Canada’s goals of being fully net-zero by 2050, nuclear energy is a key element of that strategy.

Bruce Power also contributes to global healthcare by providing essential medical isotopes. These isotopes are indispensable for diagnosing and treating diseases such as cancer, thus saving lives worldwide.

     Driving employment and economic growth

Bruce Power's impact throughout the Saugeen Shores and Bruce County region on the economy and jobs is clear:

      Job creation

The Life-Extension Program (LEP) and Major Component Replacement (MCR) Project at Bruce Power sustain an estimated 22,000 direct and indirect jobs. These opportunities span across operations, maintenance, engineering, and the supply chain.

      Economic stimulus

Bruce Power injects billions of dollars annually into Ontario's economy. The LEP alone contributes $4 billion each year, bolstering local communities and businesses.

Sustaining Operations: The LEP and MCR Project

How long will Bruce Power be operating? The Life-Extension Program ensures the safe operation of Bruce Power's reactors until 2064 through strategic maintenance and component replacement:

      Strategic maintenance

During scheduled outages, older systems in the eight reactor units undergo gradual replacement, ensuring sustained safe operation and extending the operational lifespan of each unit.

      Major Component Replacement (MCR) project

Focused on replacing critical reactor components in Units 3-8, this project creates thousands of jobs, ranging from skilled trades to project management. It underscores Bruce Power's commitment to both energy production and community welfare.

Addressing housing and real estate needs

As Bruce Power expands, housing and real estate considerations become paramount:

      Rising housing demand

Bruce Power's growth fuels demand for housing, necessitating new developments to accommodate workers, contractors, and their families. Local communities must plan for affordable housing options to meet this surge.

      Challenges and opportunities

While Bruce Power's economic impact is considerable, it strains existing housing stocks, prompting communities to address shortages and infrastructure needs. This presents opportunities for real estate developers to invest in projects catering to the burgeoning workforce.

    Future planning

As Bruce Power continues its expansion, the local community needs real estate developers to help meet evolving needs. The story of Bruce Power is a key element in the GrowthShores Capital focus on the region.
